5 Myths About Hair & Skin

When it comes to hair and skin care, there are countless myths and misconceptions that can lead to confusion. As a beauty expert, it's important to separate fact from fiction to ensure you are taking the best care of your hair and skin. Let's debunk 5 common myths about hair and skin.

Myth #1 - Drinking water will hydrate my skin enough

Although we strongly believe that proper water consumption (more than 8 glasses per day) will improve skin outcomes, drinking water alone is not enough to ensure skin hydration. Our skin needs to be moisturized topically with proper products to achieve optimal hydration.

Myth #2 - It’s better to air-dry your hair than to blow-dry it

Believe it or not, this one is actually both true and false. While it’s recommended that you spare your strands from a daily blast of hot air, it’s also not a great idea to air-dry them every day either. According to a recent study, blow-drying causes more damage to the hair’s surface, if used without heat protective treatment, but air-drying actually causes more damage within the strands themselves, which may be worse (shocker, we know). That’s because when your hair is exposed to water for extended periods of time, it swells up and puts pressure on the proteins that keep your hair intact, potentially causing more damage than heat styling. Your best bet? Use heat protective treatments and the lowest heat setting on your dryer.

Myth #3 - Coconut oil is a suitable moisturizer for my face, hair and body

Although we love this multitasking superfood, Coconut oil was not designed to be used as a moisturizer. In fact, in certain individuals, it can lead to skin irritation, breakouts and more. We recommend you keep that Coconut oil in the kitchen, and seek out topical products that have been thoughtfully designed for your skin and hair needs.

Myth #4 - Frequent shampooing damages my hair

How often you cleanse your mane is entirely up to you and is dependent upon your hair type, hairstyle, and lifestyle. If your hair is oily at the roots, wash it. If not, skip washing until it starts to feel greasy again. Either way, you want to make sure you’re washing your hair with a shampoo that’s FORMULATED FOR YOUR HAIR TYPE.

Myth #5 - I don’t need to wash my face at night if I don’t wear makeup

Throughout the day, our skin is exposed to environmental aggressors, including dirt and air pollution. Cleansing your skin at night will remove dirt, prevent irritation and minimize clogged pores.
